Episode 85: Providing Post-Secondary Success for Students with Special Needs

You know…you work in this field long enough and you begin to think you know everything about special education but as the host of this podcast and being 85 episodes in…I have found that there are still a lot of things to learn about the world of special education. Today’s topic is one of those things….supporting students in their transition to the real world and helping each and every one of them have post secondary success.

"Working on these skills will give them the boost they need to be successful." - Fiona Gonzalez

Having an elementary special education teacher background, I can honestly say that this topic is not on elementary teacher’s radar, but it should be and my guest Fiona Gonzalez from Sped Adulting is here on the show today to talk about how the transition process, although not formally, should start as early as elementary school and the skills both elementary and middle schools can teach at an early age that will help high school students more easily and successfully make the transition into the real world.

Fiona is also a curriculum creator who makes products that are age appropriate for her high school learners.  Her resources have helped thousands of teachers all over the world with their lesson plans and hundreds of thousands of students reach their goals to greater independence.  This year she has been nominated as Special Education Teacher of the Year at the EDU Choice Awards happening this summer.

Listen in as Fiona and I discuss:

  • When to start the transition process
  • How vocational training can help ease the transition from high school to real world
  • Suggestions for partnering with community agencies
  • How to incorporate age appropriate lessons
  • What elementary and middle school special education teachers can do support a high school special education teacher’s job
  • Essential skills all students should know to help them be successful at a job post-secondary
