Episode 84: Supporting Parents Outside of the Classroom with Autism Consultant Molly Johnson
When you hear the words special educator does your brain immediately go to a teacher within a classroom setting who is managing a caseload of students, providing individualized instruction and supporting student’s cognitive, behavioral and physical needs? Yep...me too!
"These parents are begging for information." - Molly Johnson
But being in the classroom isn’t for everyone and having A degree in special education can actually prepare you for a wide range of jobs outside of teaching. My guest today is here to share one of those jobs. Molly Johnson is an Autism Consultant and provides a Membership for parents looking for support with behavior and skill development. Molly left the classroom a few years ago and through her experience as a teacher she is able to provide services to empower parents to confidently support their child’s individual needs.
Molly and I discuss:
- What exactly is an autism consultant
- How to get started as an autism consultant
- How to help parents understand their child’s challenging behavior and support behavior needs
- Some things parents can start implementing today to have a positive impact on their child’s behaviors
- The role the environment plays when it comes to challenging behaviors
- How visual supports play a role in an autistic child’s environment
- How parents can get started with visuals
