Episode #69: How to Welcome a New Student and Their Family to Your Classroom

Today’s episode is dedicated to something I imagine a lot of special educators take for granted because it's something that occurs often but not so often to really think about the procedures you have in place when it does happen..

And that is what to do when you get a new student on your caseload.

Try to get an idea of their likes and dislikes to use as preferred activities

Now, it could be that you know the child is coming ahead of time which gives you plenty of time to plan and prepare properly. Some parents are highly aware of the need to inform the incoming school about their child’s needs, but sadly that’s not always the case.

Luckily…today’s guest has done the prep work for us.

Fabiana from the Autism Advantage is here to share her steps and processes of what to do to make a new student and their family feel welcome and helps us put together a plan of action for the next time you receive a new student.

Listen in as she shares how she...

  • Meets with parents/family to build trust
  • Gets to know the student and their preferred activities
  • Works collaboratively with her staff to ensure a smooth transition
  • Engages and includes other students to prepare them for a new classmate

You can learn more from Fabiana on Instagram and find her resources at the Autism Advantage on TPT
