Ep #37 5 Tips to Becoming a Reflective Teacher
“Purposeful reflection means not just thinking about our behaviors and their effect on the work we do, but doing something about it. 'What am I going to do differently in order to better meet student needs'"- Tony Frontier

I have this quote printed on a little card and I keep it in my desk drawer so that I can see it every time I go to get a pen.

In my humble little opinion, self-reflection is a duty you owe to yourself, your students and your school system to put in the effort to become the best educator you can be.

“Purposeful reflection means not just thinking about our behaviors and their effect on the work we do, but doing something about it. 'What am I going to do differently in order to better meet student needs'"- Tony Frontier

Reflective teaching is a process whereby teachers build self-awareness and continuously evaluate their behavior and methodologies, with the aim of continued professional development.

It's a cycle where you teach, self-assess, consider new techniques and ways of reaching students, putting them into practice and then repeating and repeating and repeating.

In today's episode, I discuss the 5 ways I use to become a more reflective teacher:
1) Student exit tickets
2) Build reflection into your lesson plans
3) Peer Observations (have them observe you)
4) Observe other teachers
5) Mindful processing

Whatever you choose, I just want you to pick 2-3 things and stick with them. Make them a systemic part of how you do business as an educator. Be courageous to accept that you don’t know everything. I promise that if you engage in some type of reflective practice, if you think about, analyze and evaluate your professional practices, you WILL improve as a teacher and even more importantly, your students will benefit as well.
