Ep #34: Co-Teaching Within Special Education: The Art to Making it Work
Co-teaching can be a pretty hot topic in the world of special education. Some teachers enjoy it while others have either not co-taught at all or have had a negative experience. For me, I've been on both ends of the spectrum.
Today's guest on the Sped Prep Academy Podcast is Ashley Lutz from Spedtaculardays and she shares how co-teaching can be compared to dating.
Co-teaching can be compared to dating
Wait...what??
Yep...just like in the dating game, there are going to be disasters, there are going to be MEH relationships where it's fine, but not stellar, and then you'll come across The One...the person who just "gets you". The ying to your yang.
You will have a give and take partnership and work so well together that you'll be the envy of your school.
Who will it be?
- Another special education teacher?
- A general education teacher?
- A speech & language pathologist?
- An OT? PT?
- A paraprofessional?
There are plenty of options for how co-teaching can look and Ashley explains the benefits of working with another teacher, how to address conflict between the two teachers, and gives real life examples of how a principal of a school has made co-teaching an expectation for all staff.
