4 Tools to Help You Be a Better Leader for Your Staff

A few weeks ago, in episode 148 we worked on mindset around the fact that you most likely didn't go to school to be the boss and you don't have the knowledge or skillset to lead anyone. I shared how, in spite of not having any training, you ARE the leader of your classroom and like it or not, you have to lean into that role.

Today I want to give you some tools to do just that...accept your leadership position and thrive in it.  Here's a breakdown of the valuable tools and strategies shared to enhance leadership skills and foster a positive, effective team dynamic:

  1. Creating an Expectation List:

    • Learn how to categorize expectations into 'Stop', 'Start', and 'Continue' to streamline communication and set boundaries.
    • Examples and tips on how to effectively implement this in your team.
  2. Empowering Staff with Choice and Voice:
    • The importance of understanding each team member's strengths, preferences, and interests.
    • How to use an interest survey or inventory to tailor responsibilities and tasks, thereby boosting job satisfaction and team efficiency.
  3. The Power of Fun and Laughter:
    • Emphasizing the importance of team-building and shared laughter.
    • Suggestions for activities and strategies to cultivate a relaxed and safe team environment, essential in the high-stress field of special education.
  4. Utilizing an Employee Handbook:
    • The role of handbooks in providing structure and clarity.
    • Insights into creating a specialized handbook for your team and where to find resources to help you get started.
