Visual Schedules & Beyond with Lisa Holladay from the Chalkboard Superhero

Do you use visual schedules within your special education classroom?

Are you updating them often?

Are you making sure they are age appropriate?

Are the students ACTUALLY using them?

All these questions and more are addressed through today's episode with Lisa from the Chalkboard Superhero.

"Students need to be explicitly taught how to use visual schedules."

Lisa is a special education teacher currently working in the high school setting.  She has been in the classroom for over 15 years and has worked with a wide variety of students.  She has worked in elementary all the way through transitional ages.  Lisa has also worked in both residential settings as well as public school settings.  Currently she is teaching a 6:1:3 Autism classroom where Autism has become a passion of hers. And she LOVES teaching other teachers about visual schedules.

In addition to her daily role as a teacher, Lisa is also the lead organizer for the Autism Resource Team for her district, started a thriving school-based business with her students making and selling dog treats, advocates for Down Syndrome and juggles all of that with raising 3 young kids and running a successful business.

Listen in as Lisa and I discuss:

  • What a visual schedule is
  • The different types of visual schedules
  • Why ALL students need a schedules
  • How long they should be
  • Ways to teach students to use a schedule
  • The importance of teaching paraprofessional staff to implement a visual schedule
  • The ultimate goal of a visual schedule

SO much good stuff that all special education teachers need to hear.
