Episode 91: Teacher to Teacher Leader: Providing Special Educators with a Middleman
On today’s show, we have our first guest repeat. Heather from Full Sped Ahead is back with us to talk about all things Teacher Leadership.
Heather is a self contained special education teacher who uses her experience and talents as a business owner, helping other teacher’s grow in this field and has presented at many educational conferences including Educators 2 Educators, The Intentional IEP, Thriving in Sped, Teach It Special, and Master IEP Coach.
In today’s episode, we chat about what those skills and qualities are and the importance of a teacher leader position within a district.
"An instructional coach is like a middleman between you and your supervisor and is there to provide support and lean on"-Heather Cacioppo
As I stated on an episode or 2 ago, I will be making the change this fall to move into a leadership role within my district to be an instructional coach for all special education teachers. Heather is also a teacher leader within her own right and hopes to make the change to full-time teacher leader in the near future and as you’ll hear, it is apparent that she has the skills to make that happen.
Listen in as we discuss:
- What a teacher leader is
- What types of characteristics they should have
- The importance of instructional coaches for special educators
- Where teachers can lead in both formal and informal roles
- The value of learning from a teacher leader vs an administrator or outside presenter
- The process of becoming a more formal teacher leader and
- Heather and my stories about why we have chosen this path
