Episode #83: The Benefits of Implementing a Therapy Dog at School
Therapy dogs help to calm students who are anxious, scared or upset. They also increase the overall morale of the entire building.
A therapy dog promotes greater self-esteem and focused interaction with other students and teachers.
Perhaps the greatest benefit of therapy dogs in the classroom is the effect on students’ social-emotional development
My district has 3 therapy dogs who are based out of 3 different elementary buildings, with my dog Tucker being the most recent.
If you are interested in implementing a therapy dog at your school...it is possible to get it done. There may need to be a lot of discussion and changing of mindsets, but if you are willing to put in the work, it's totally worth it!
Listen in as I share about the benefits of having a therapy dog:
- Physical benefits such as lowered stress and anxiety
- Cognitive benefits such as increased memory and attention
- Social/Emotional benefits such as increased confidence and decreased behaviors
