Episode #70: The Steps to Take Before and After an IEP Meeting
As special educators, we all most likely have a good understanding of the importance of the IEP meeting but today we’re going to back up to help teachers understand that there is a lot of work to put in BEFORE the meeting and there are even things to do AFTER the meeting that you may not be aware of.
One thing that really, really helps me is utilizing my paraprofessional
In today's episode, we are chatting with Whitney Lowrey from Rooted in Resource.
Before the IEP Meeting:
- Fill in the IEP calendar at the beginning of each school year
- Schedule the IEP meeting with the parents at least 3 weeks in advance (or follow your district's requirements)
- Send out teacher and parent input forms (digitally or paper/pencil)
- Send home the draft IEP about a week before the meeting (or follow your district's requirements)
After the IEP Meeting:
- Finalize the IEP (type in comments/changes/additions made during the meeting into the IEP system)
- Send home a copy of the finalized IEP to the parent
- Give the teacher a copy of the snapshot
- Send the original IEP with signatures to the district office
- Adjust any schedule changes
- Communicate changes with paraprofessionals
- Update goal data sheets
