#48 What Your Paraprofessionals Want From a Supervisor-Part 3

Today’s guest is the super spunky Sheila . Sheila is a current paraprofessional in my department and has an ever-ending amount of energy. She embraces each day with a smile and a positive attitude and our department just wouldn’t be the same without her. Let’s listen as Sheila tells us why she became a paraprofessional and what things as teachers we can do to support her in her role.

"A good leader is happy leader...attitude is contagious" -Sheila

Today’s episode is Part 3 of the Paraprofessional Interview Series.

Each week in August, I will have a different paraprofessional come on the show to talk about their experiences in the classroom from what they need from their teachers to what training they desire to what support they crave.

And all of this coincides with my course The How-To Guide to Training Your Paraprofessionals. Now the cart doesn’t open until Aug 21 but you can get on the waitlist now and receive all the information once it opens. All you have to do is go to https://www.spedprepacademy.com/waitlist and sign up. It’s that easy.

With it being back to school season and for all of us who work within the field of special education whether you are a teacher, or an administrator or a related service provider...working with paraprofessionals is a large part of your job.

And having taught for 26 years, I have had lots and lots of experience of working with paraprofessionals...and it can be a very stressful part of a special educator's job, or it can be a very rewarding part.

It's all up to you!

But it does take time to learn how to be a good leader and it takes a certain mindset to be able to acknowledge that these paraprofessionals, or paras or assistants whatever you call them...they are important to our success as special educators and we couldn’t do our jobs without them.

On the show today, Sheila shares...

  • What makes a good leader and a good para
  • How flexibility is super important
  • The need for collaboration between the Sped department and gen ed teachers
  • And why using a para binder is beneficial to paras
