Episode #77: How to Plan for a Resource Room

Now I know what you might be thinking..because I'm thinking it too…there are SOOOO many different ways to plan for a resource room and what works for me may not work for you and what works for you might not work for me…and that’s okay.

No resource room runs the same way as another. So I’m going to explain what I do to plan and you can take this information and adjust it, tweak it, expand on it…whatever you need to do to help it apply to your situation.

The first thing to do when planning for a resource room…you have to know the data!

This episode is part 3 of a three part series on how to run a resource room. We've talked about setting one up and how to schedule for a resource room so today, we're gonna start planning for it.

But before you can start planning, you have to know what you are planning for. In other words, you have to know your data.

Now that might sound like a little too obvious but I feel like it needs to be mentioned because when I started this job, I thought all I had to do was focus on the IEP goals but there is so much more to providing special education services than just working on the IEP goals.

Once you go through your building, district and student data...NOW you are ready to plan. As a resource teacher for 27 years, I have changed and modified the way I've done this more times than I can count but the method I currently use works very well and allows me to provide that direct instruction at each student's individual zone of proximal development.

Within a resource room, there are usually 3 different components to plan for...inclusion, pull out for students with learning disabilities and pull out for students with higher needs.

And each of those planning pieces look a little different. So let's break it down.

Inclusion:

  • Collaborate with general education teacher
  • Choose your framework
  • Discuss standards and lessons to be taught

Resource Room for LD:

  • Base your plans on the amount of time you have with students
  • Use a mixture of:
    • Spiral review
    • Standards instruction
    • Independent instruction on missing skills
    • IEP goals

Resource Room for ID, Autism, DD, etc.

  • Use task box system
    • Example: 20 boxes per week, 4 per day
  • Switch out activities often
  • Students work for a reward or free time
  • IEP goal boxes
