How to Support Your Staff with Behavior

If I was a gambling gal, I would lay down some big bucks that you've dealt with some extreme behaviors throughout your career. Whether it's hitting, kicking, biting, screaming, defiance or a demolished classroom, I imagine you've experienced one of the above.

You and your staff need to be on the same page

On today’s show I have a special guest who, if you hang out on the teacher gram and follow other special educators, I bet you’ve heard of her. Nicole Morris has her Master’s Degree in special education with graduate certificates in Applied Behavior Analysis and Adapted Curriculum. She spent 6 years as a self contained teacher for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders and then 2 years ago transitioned into a position with a behavioral clinic while working to become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. She has a blog, a podcast and a Teachers Pay Teachers store all under the name Adaptation Station.

Nicole and I sat down and had a chat about all things behavior from how I can help my staff figure out the function of the behavior, what’s important to remember during a breakdown to suggestions of reinforcers...and so much more. It was truly my pleasure to be able to pick her brain and I know it will help you too.

Nicole and I discuss:

  • What does function of the behavior even mean and what the main functions of behavior are
  • How to help your staff figure out why a child is doing the things he’s doing
  • What is important to remember when teachers and paras are in the middle of an outburst
  • The different types of reinforce
  • What interventions are recommended to use with a child who displays extreme behaviors
