Ep #30: How Special Educators Can Support Their SLPs with Tara Tuchel

When people hear the term special education they typically think of a teacher working one on one or in a small group with students and working on reading or math or writing skills...and while that is a pretty accurate depiction, special education is also so much more than that.

Special education can be thought of as an umbrella with multiple components underneath it. Special education can include inclusion, pull out, consultation, or self-contained classes but it also encompasses our related services which include speech and language, occupational therapy, physical therapy, vision and hearing services, etc.

"It is SO important to train paras and other staff on HOW and WHY we are using alternative and augmentative communication systems."

Today's guest on the podcast is Tara Tuchel (it's German and pronounced Tookle...I asked 😊).

Tara is a Speech/Language Pathologist who provides direct therapy to young children ages 2.5-5.  About 80% of her caseload either has suspected autism or has been given the educational label of autism.  She provides services in both a self-contained setting, and within an integrated preschool setting.

Within the self-contained setting, she co-teaches with the early childhood special education teacher and works collaboratively with all staff to make decisions on who teaches what skill and what mini-trainings need to be given to ensure everyone is working on the same page.

Tara shares with us the importance of working as a team, how to support staff with communication devices and how to share the responsibilities of the IEP goals. As far as specific equipment, she feels that it is SO important to train paras, and other staff on HOW and WHY the different alternative and augmentative communication systems are used.

Tara's reach doesn't stop within her own district. She is also a TPT author at  Autism Little Learners and has published a children's book about autism called "My Best Friend Will." You can get a copy here!

You can connect with Tara on social media and her website by using Autism Little Learners on all platforms.

A resource Tara would like to share with you is titled “At Home Visual Supports”.  She created it for parents to use at home during the pandemic, but it has also been used by countless SLP’s, special education teachers, and paras to help learn how to implement some  of the most simple visual supports in the classroom.

She also has a free mini-training on FB that walks parents and professionals through how to use many of these visual supports.
