Ep #26: 3 Steps to Create an Expectation List for Your Staff

I did not go into teaching special education to be a boss...I went into it wanting to make a difference by teaching the most special population of children, but I soon realized that it wasn’t an option. At the ripe old age of 23, I was officially the boss to my first paraprofessional and then spent the next 20 years trying to figure out what I was doing wrong.

My co-teacher and I have supervised over 80 paraprofessionals!

We have seen the best of the best and the worst of the worst. We have made some lifelong friends and we have made some big time enemies.

Within that time, I felt so much resentment towards different people because I let them walk all over me. I would do their jobs often because I didn’t want to come across as bossy or because it was just easier to do it myself than to deal with the crappy attitudes.

Now don’t get me wrong...I can create a list of amazing paraprofessionals who never caused any issues, did their jobs and were a blessing to the department...but that wasn’t because of my leadership skills...it was because who they are as human beings.

Thankfully, my leadership skills have increased significantly through lots of self-reflection, a little luck and some great intentional planning on my part.

In today's episode, I walk you through an activity that I first did 6 years ago when I changed schools and inherited a whole new staff. This activity has been a life-saver for my department and I want to share it with you.

Listen in to learn how to create an expectation list for your staff.
