Ep #17: What is the Prompting Hierarchy and Why Should You Teach it to Your Paraprofessionals?

In today’s episode, we talk about the prompting hierarchy and the importance of teaching it to your paraprofessionals. As a special educator, even if you’ve never heard of the prompting hierarchy, it’s very likely that you’ve been implementing this process in your classroom all along.

It’s probably second nature to help a student complete a task and then slowly back off to let them learn how to do it on their own.

However, it is less likely that your paraprofessionals have this innate ability to know when and how to do this and that’s why it’s super important that you intentionally teach it to them.

And by intentionally...I don’t mean slap a poster on the wall and expect them to understand it and implement it on their own. Whether it’s one-on-one, in a small group or in inclusion, the majority of your para’s school day will be to instruct students and therefore they need direct instruction on what prompting is and why it’s important and then they need to have it modeled for them.

Listen in to learn just how to do that!
