How to Start and Manage a Student Store

It's no secret that our students need extra exposure and instruction to the real-world skills they will face in their daily lives.

That's why it's so important to provide them with hands-on experiences, even from young ages, such as running a student store in their school.

"Starting small was our most successful strategy"

I am thrilled to welcome back Maureen Howard from Spoonful of Sped for the second time on the show. Maureen is a special education teacher and was a guest on Episode 96 where we chatted about how to implement student-led IEP meetings. Today, Maureen is here to talk more about how we can help to increase our student's skills even more by helping them run a school store.

In this episode, Maureen shares her experience of running a school store with students who have disabilities. She talks about how the school store not only provides practical experience for the students but also helps them build important life skills such as communication, problem-solving, and teamwork.

Maureen also discusses the challenges she faced while setting up the store and how she overcame them. She emphasizes the importance of planning, organization, and collaboration with other teachers and staff members.

Throughout the episode, Maureen shares some practical tips and strategies for setting up and running a school store with students.
Listen in as we discuss:

  • How to get started
  • What teachers should keep in mind before jumping in
  • Other options besides a coffee cart
  • The do’s and don’ts
  • What to say to those who say they don’t have the time, the space, or the resources to run a store
  • Skills/benefits to students from participating in a student store

Overall, this episode is a must-listen for any teacher who wants to create meaningful and practical learning experiences for students with disabilities. So, let's dive in and learn from Maureen's expertise and experience!
