Ep #12: 5 Ways to Include Students in the IEP

Let me start with a Scenario: You receive an evaluation request to test a 2nd grade girl for a suspected learning disability.

You follow the procedures of testing the student, observing the student, getting input from gen ed and parents and get to meeting.

And then it hits you...

YOU FORGOT TO PUT THE "I" IN THE IEP

As most of us go through our degree programs, we are taught that once a student closes in on 13 years of age, that they must become involved in the IEP process. They will be invited to the meetings, they will be given questionnaires about their future goals, how they learn best and their current ability to take care of themselves on an independent basis.

And that’s all great. But what about the younger children? Why can’t they be a part of the process as well. I understand that attending an hour long meeting with a room full of scary adults isn’t in their best interest and that’s not what I’m implying.

This episode of the Sped Prep Academy Podcast, I to over easy to implement ways of including students in the IEP process.
